Misses Spence and Seaton returned last evening from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Arthur iVncent, W'ho have been on a holiday visit to Christchurch, have returned to Westport. Mr H. V. Pelvin. of the Social Security Department at Waimate is being transferred to the charge of the Department at Westport. Miss Tredrea of Queensland, and Miss Carter of Christchurch, after a hike over the Lewis Pass, came on to Westport last evening by rail-car, and intend to leave for Greymouth by th* coastal road shortly. In the absence of the President, Mr J. Menzies, the meeting of the general committee of the Buller A. & P. Association was presided over by Mr R. Lowt, There were also present Messrs D. E. Broad, L. Menzies. W. H. Hateley, H. V.'Palmer, M. Durkin. R. Stephen, H. Bennett, J. W. Stowell, Junr., F. H. Kelly. J. L. Bailey, F Skilton and N. Archer. The chairman referred to the death in Wellington of Mr F. A. de Tourettes, who had been a member of the Association m its early days and had filled the office of President. A motion of regret at the demise, and sympathy with the relatives was carried in silence. The appointment of Mr Frederick Page ot Brightwater, as judge of the hor.se section was confirmed. The secretary’s renly to a letter from Mr W. DDron of Richmond, in reference to the judging of the cattle section w'as en-1 dorsed. It was decided to invite Mr
F. w. Thomson to judge the vegetables and fruit sections and to ask Mr G. Purvis of Christchurch to judge the butter classes. The Westport Borough Council was thanked for its donation to the funds, and the secretary was instructed to thank Mr Collins for his donation and also ito thank the Westport Trotting Club for donating £2 2s for a special prize in the trotters’ and nacers’ sections. The treasurer reported that arrangements in connection with sideshows were well under way, also that he had discussed the matter of a train service on Show Day with several Reefton peopl/e. The chairman stated that he also had discussed the matter of a train service with Reefton residents. An enquiry for space for merry-go-round and side-shows was received from Stewart’s Enterprises. It was decided to grant space for tho merry-go-round, but not for side-shows. An enquiry from Mrs T. Wyatt, Harihari, in reference to riding events was discussed. It was decided to inform Mrs Wyatt if sufficient entries were forthcoming the committee would be prepared to include additional events for ladv competitors in the horse section, and would be glad to receive suggestions in regard to such events. The horse committee was instructed to confer with the Trotting Club and Owners’ and Breeders’ Association in reference to trotting exhibitions and to report in regard to these at next ' Tuesday’s meeting. The matter of a working bee at the Show Grounds was brought up, and Mr Palmer was requested to submit a report to next meeting on the work required to be carried out. It was also decided to request the juvenile members to give assistance with the work required for the ; hoT,se (section. Mr N. Archer brought up the matter of cups for the horse section stating that these trophies should have been provided a couple of years ago. After the conditions regarding the Melrose Challenge Cup and the other trophy which had; been authorised had been discussed, a motion that the purchase
'be expedited was passed. A sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board was held in the Courthouse on Wednesday, Mr W. Meldrum presided and with him were Messrs P. J. McLean and A J. Panther, and Mr C. Wilsoncroft, watersider (Waterside Union), had his obligation to serve adjourned one month, he having been engaged on army work in the Islands and was discharged grade three and is now regraded one. An appeal for H. G. Mitchell, sawyer bv H., M. Mitchell and Norris Bros, was adjourned for review in three months. T. I. Prestige, gardener, appealed on the grounds of undue hardship. He stated that h e had no objection to service in Westport, but owing to family responsiiblities he did not wish to leave home. —The appeal was adjourned for three months. An appeal for G. Levestam, shipping clerk, by the Anchor Shipping Coy. was adjourned for three months. S, G. Kelly, in camp, appealed against overseas service.— Adjourned for three months.
