[Our Own Correspondent.] High Tides. Port of Westport. a.m. p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 16 05.00 05.32 Thursday, Dec. 17 06.15 06.44 Friday, Dec 18 07.18 07.40 WESTPORT, Dec. 15. The Westport Trotting Club have received excellent nominations for their one-day meeting on December 26. A total of 137 nominations were received for the eight events ranging from 10 to 27 in individual races.
Mr. T. Parfitt returned on Monday from Wellington. Mrs. N. S. Clarke, of Greymouth arrived by rail-car yesterday on a visit to her mother, Mrs. J. Chamberlain.
Mrs. W. B. Gadd left for Christchurch this morning on a visit to her mother, who is seriously ill. Mr. John Dowgray left on Monday for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Directors of the Bank of New Zealand. Mr. W. A. 'Parker left on Monday by rail-car after attending the funeral of his grandmother. Mrs. A. M. Cowan.
Mrs. Cain arrived in Westport yesterday from Christchurch on a visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Parker.
The Patriots Committee acknowledges the sum of £1 15s from Mrs. Foote, per Mrs. E. Fair; also £lO from the Stockton Mine Patriotic Committee, per Mrs. Connew. A public meeting was held in the Town Hall for the purpose of forming a committee to organise the recruitment of girls and women for the Army, Air Force. Navy and land services. Those present were: Mr. J. M. Robertson (chair), Mr. J. Ward, Mr. A. Taylor and Captain Parkes, Mesdames Robertson, I. Ryan, Slee, Spencer, Stowell Simpson, Ridsdale, Crase and Misses Beuke and Williams. The Liaison Officer for the War Publicity Committee, (Mr. L. R. Skeats) advised that the need for- women in the various services was an urgent one and that it was imperative lor a local organisation to be formed for the Buller district. The- national campaign will probably be opened on January 16 by Her Excellency Lady Newall, Commander-in-Chief of the Women’s Service. The meeting decided that all members present form themselves into a committee with power to add, and to meet again early in January for the purpose of opening the campaign in this district. It was suggested that representatives already in the services should visit. Westport and other parts of the Coast to assist in recruitment. Representatives of the W.W.S.A. present promised to give every assistance by parades and distribution of posters, - etc.
