The Director-General of Agriculture (Mr. A. H. Cockayne) will retire on March 31 next, after three months’ leave of absence. He was appointd to the position in Ma.v, 1936, in succession to Dr. C. J. Reakes, he having previously been assistant Director-General.

The punt, which has been in the course of construction to alleviate the hold-up of traffic caused through the washing away of portion of the Big Wanganui River bridge in South Westland, was put into operation yesterday for the first time. Built by Mr Drummondj-Fraser, • contractor, of Karamea, it proved an unqualified success, and will fill a much felt want until the traffic bridge is re-, paired. Mr Drummond-Fraser had the able support of Mi’ G. Rowley, chairman of the Inter-Wanganui Dairy Co., Harihari, in the work of getting the punt into operation. South Westland settlers will be grateful for this convenience until such time- as the bridge is re-opened for traffic. Two cars were ferried across yesterday and general satisfaction was expressed at the working of the punt.
