General. Smuts’ slogan, “I am going to fetch our boys from Italy.” has swept South Africa. A cross-section of opinion in Durban, Capetown, and Johannesburg shows. the Army are eager to help General Smuts bring back their comrades from the Italian prison camps. The J'ohannesburg “Sunday Times” says in an editorial: “Many are so eager to serve in Europe that we understand officers and men in North, Africa, including members of the First Division, asked General Smuts to take the action he has announced. South African troops arriving at J'ohannesburg from Madagascar cheered wildly and flung caps in the air, • when told that General Smuts has announced they might fight outside Africa. Civilians uproariously gave an, ovation to the troops.
