Mr W. Champion, who has managed for the Public Works Department in far South Westland for some years past a vessel which has done excellent service, is about to leave that district sailing with his vessel from Jackson Bay to Greymouth when weather conditions permit. During the time he has been in South Westland Mr Champion has alone managed the vessel, and has brought goods and materials from Jackson Bay into several of the rivers where development work has been going on in rhe way of bridges and roads. Mr Champion with his vessel has been an asset to the settlers as vzell as the Government, the success of the work having been greatly due to his skill and enterprise, while his obliging and courteous manner has won Rim the high esteem ofi the residents generally. This was plainly demonstrated on Tuesday last when he was tendered a farewell social, and his friends mustered in force and made him a« presentation. A testimonial with a very substantial cheque was handed to Mr Champion, and tributes were paid him, regret beino- expressed at his departure. Dancing was_ continued until three o’clock in the morning, music being supplied principally fiy Mr D. J. Nolan, while Mr . .Ted Schofield was M.C., the gathering proving a most enjoyable one.
