CHRISTMAS SPENDING

Big Check in Australia [Aust. & .N.Z. Cable Assn.] (Rec. 12.35) CANBERRA, Nov. 6. Part of the Government’s plan to restrict purchasing regulations are being issued soon prohibiting any advertisement relating to the sale of goods containing any reference to Christmas, New Year, the Yuletide festival season, etc. All advertisements intended to promote the sale of Christmas, New Year and Easter gifts will be prohibited. Hon. Mr Dedman, Minister for the War Organisation of Industry, said that the object of this ban was to help to prevent waste of manpower and materials, which would result from unrestricted holiday buying. While the Government was waging austerity, it was no.t appropriate that there should be a period of luxury spending. At the same time, there was no desire to interfere with gifts to members of the Forces, or to a seasonable exchange of modest gifts between relatives and friends.
