GREY TROTS
SECOND DAY Tenpenhybit Again GOLDFINDER WINS TWO-MILE EVENT. The Greymouth Trotting Club’s spring meeting was concluded on Saturday in fine weather, with the track in firm condition. There was a very large attendance, even better than that on the first day of the meeting. Cash receipts were £lOO more than those for -the second day last year. Tenpennybit, the brilliant four-year-old pacer, trained by E, J. Smith, at Prebbleton for Mr. M. Co.fey and whose from was the subject ot much favourable comment on Labour Day, scored his second win tor the meeting in the Labour -Dav Handicap. He has now secured iou. firsts and one third since he started rac’ng last December. He was, however, scratched in the Whirlwind Handicap, in which he was put on 36 yards. Goldfinder showed excellent form in the Hurricane Handlrap, which he won by 25 lengths, ana his time 4.36 3-5 for the two miles was good in the light of the fact that hie made his own pace practically throughout, following an electricsprint from the barrier, which took him. from the outside, into a .leading P °TokSon. who finished second in the Labour Dav Handicap, was only recently purchased by Mr. H. Stafford, of Leeston, from Messrs Teahen and Wharton. He promises to do bette; ye*t. Surrey Park, who was in the picture for a while in the Progressive Handicap, has been purchased by Mr. J. 'R. Tavlor, of Hokitika, and being comparatively a one, may be expected to show further improvement. „ , . Dunne- the day, four drivers were penalised. F. Jamison, and W. R. Butt for careless driving and C. K. Yeatman and L. A. Williams for not driving their horses out at the finish.
TOTALISATOR RECORD. A totalisator record for* the West Coast, which had stood for more than twenty years, was on Saturday broken at Victoria Park. For the dav the machine put through £18,856 ex“ ceeding by £1.251 the previous highest one-day turnover, which was resistered on the second day of the mid-summer meeting over 21 years ago, namely, on January 3, 1921, Athat meeting also the former two-d&’ 7 record was set, £32,516 10s. there having been £14,911 10s handled on the first day, December 31, 1920. For this meeting the gross turnover was £35,887, including £17,031, nut through on the first day (Labour Day) which latter was only £574 below the previous one-day maximum. Compared with last year, the second day aggregate this year showed an increase ol £5.244 10s‘, whilst this meeting’s figures as a whole were £5.411 10s in excess of last year’s. The Club may thus be congratulated upon the latest evidence of its progress, the records in each case at this meeting being such not only, of .its own, but of the West Coast. • , General satisfaction was exxpressed by the public on Saurday at the expedition shown, both in the handling of the increased investments by the totalisator staff, which was very speedy, and in the despatch of all or the fields, which left .little to be der sired. The Municipal Band rendered a programme during the afternoon. The booths and refreshment rooms did verv brisk trade. In the case of the former, the introduction of a more adequate water supply would prove an advantage.
