AIRMAN’S BODY FOUND.

WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. Air Force Headquarters, Wellington, received official adyice that the bodv of Sergeant NeilU Ernest King was recovered yestejrday afternoon, together with the wreckage of thp aircraft which went down in the sea off the east coast of the South Island on Wednesday. King was the son of F, E. King, Christchurch. TWO CHARGES OF MURDER. p.A. NAPIER, October 30. David John Campbell, timberworker, aged 20, who did not appear, was called to answer two 1 charges of murder, at the Police Court to-day. The police asked for and were granted a remand to November 11, when it is hoped to go on with the charges. Accused’s legal representative did not oppose the adjournment.

U.S. SOLDIERS’ MARRIAGES

WELLINGTON, Oct. 30

The inevitable crop of romances since the arrival of forces in New Zealand has brought into some prominence the question of marriage conditions. No ban is imposed l by the United States authorities, but any serviceman wanting to marry is first required to seek permission of the highest ranking officer in his area. The officer may grant permission at his own discretion. When it comes to entry to the United States, the wife is admitted free of the quota system, but is subject to all other provisions of the immigration laws relating to health, character, and so on. Marriage does not automaticallv confer citizenship on the wife, but after five years’ residence she may take steps to become naturalised. This involves some preparation and the passing of certain tests. INDUSTRIAL REGISTRATION WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. The announcement that steps will be taken shortly to carry out a widespread check up on registrations of persons liable to register for work of national importance was made by the Minister of Industrial Manpower (Mr McLagan) to-day. He said a checkup would be taken with a view to taking action against defaulters and employers should see that all persons in their employ eligible to re-, gister for such work were able to produce their official slips acknowleding registration.

GIFT FOR EX-SERVICEMEN. WELLINGTON, Oct. 30The Rehabilitation Minister (Mr. Semple) announced to-day that one of the outstanding gifts for the benefit of ex-servicemen made in recent months, was by Mr. Joseph Udy, of Carterton, the proceeds of investments amounting to £4,750. TRANSPORT PROBLEMS. WELLINGTON, Oct. 30. Referring to the suspension of certain road transport services, Mr. Semple said, tol-day that this had been forced upon' the authorities through circumstances beyond their control, and it was necessary to take these steps in the. interests of the nation as a whole. The Minister added that he had been inundated with requests to intervene in decisions given by Licensing Authorities, but he made it plain there would be no interference by him.

A general scheme for zoning grocery deliveries throughout the country has been approved by Mr. Semple. It provides that in a build-up area no grocer may deliver more than once a week, and in addition should not deliver small parcels. The smallest must weigh 81bs, or be over three cubic feet. In rural areas, special arrangements are being made to prevent overlapping. WAI KATO MINES. AUCKLAND, Oct. 30. “Since the men returned to work a transformation has come over the Waikato mining district,”, said. Mr. P. iC. Webb, referring to his visit to

Huntiy. “The utmost goodwill prevails all round, and everybody appears to appreciate the need for increased coal production.” He said that the Control Board met the Industrial Production Council and the pit committees last night, and that the feeling on all sides was excellent. Never before had there been such close co-operation between the representatives of the companies and the miners. “From what I saw,” he said, “a most inspiring spirit of goodwill has been introduced, which will last a long time. Mr. Webb said that both sides agreed that there had been a lot of exaggeration concerning men staying away from work deliberately. He intended to take up the question of ab- ; senteeism among the Maoris with t-he I Minister-in-Charge of the Maori War effort. Neither pakeha nor Maori ' would be allowed to hold up production. He added that co-operative trucking was releasing more experienced men for work on the coal face. BULLER DROWNING. 'nelson, Oct. 29. The body of Mr. R. Thurlow, who was drowned while crossmg the Buller River with his wife, has not yet been recovered. It is now certain that Mr. Thurlow was on the cablei-chair with his wife when the cable block C °Mrs S Thurlow was a member of the executive of the New Zealand Federation of Women’s Institutes.
