LACK OF AMMUNITION

AUSTRALIAN-MADE GUNS.

[Special to N.Z. Press Assn]. (Rec. 10.15.) SYDNEY, Oct. 29. Ammunition shortages were to blame for a failure to use the Australian Owen sub-machine-gun in the eariy stages of the New Guinea campaign, stated the Army Minister (Mr F. M. Forde). Both the Owen ana the Austen guns required nine millimetre ammunition, which, until a vear ago, was not made in Australia. Thompson sub-machine-guns were used extensively in New Guinea, the main reason being: that there were large stocks of the necessary point forty-five ammunition on hand. Th P Minister of Munitions. Mr Makin, states that the Australian manufacture of ammunition for the Owen gun is being developed rapidly, though it is not yet in full production.

These Ministerial statements are expected to close a controversy which has been waged here concerning an afileged official bias against the use of these Australian-made weapons
