The British Ministry of Food plans this season to ensure the orderly distribution of 60,000 tons of tomatoes, according to the Minister (Lord Woolton). He said that 102,000 shops had received fairly regular supplies. Even in the Orkney and Shetland Islands an average of 311 b a head had been distributed. ' The scheme had been worked voluntarily, and conditional selling and black marketing had faded out. It was the first attempt made in Britain or any other country to control the distribution of a highly perishable crop.
