R.A.F. ATTACKS
In Germany and Holland LONDON, October 6. An Air Ministry communique states: “Single aircraft o.f the Bomoer Command attacked targets m Western Germany and Holland at daylight to-day. No- aircraft are missing from these operations. A newly-formed French-Canadian bomber souadron operated for tne first time last night when it participated in an attack on Western Germany. On the outward and homeward journeys hail, rain, thunderstorms, and icing were experienced. The flight engineer of one bomber was temporarily blinded by lightning as he looked out of the astro dome. ' Mosquitoes of the Bomber Command made a low level attack at dusk on Tuesday on a factory and power station near Hangelo, about 100 miles inland from th e Dutch coast. They flew so low across Holland they could clearly see men and women in the villages on the roads. They were not challenged by aircraft or flak, but one machine was forced to turn back after collision with a flock of birds. Its windows were smashed and members of the crew were badly cut by glass. The pilot, who momentarily lost control, returned, home. The others went on and bombed a factory and power station. Debris was flung up by the explosions, and flames and smoke were seen from the objectives. Eight persons were killed, and two are missing, and a number were injured when a British ’ulane_.crashed last night in the middle of the Somersham village, Huntingdonshire, wrecking six cottages and damaging others. When the ’plane got into difficulties, the crew baled, out and landed safely.. The crash caused a tremendous fire visible for miles. Firemen, Home Guards, soldiers and airmen joined in the work of rescuing ajid recovering the bodies from the debris. The ’plane cut off the roof of one house, but the occupants downstairs escaped? It then went straight through another house, and crashed into a cottage on the opposite side of the street. RAID IN N-W. GERMANY. (Rec. 12.12 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. The German News Agency says that R.A.F. planes dropped fire bombs and explosives in north-western Germany on Tuesday night, damaging residential districts. RAID IN HOLLAND. (Rec. 1.12 a.m.) LONDON, Oct. 7. The Air Ministry announced: Bomber Command mosquito planes at dusk on Monday night attacked a factory and power station near Hengely, in Holland at low level. There was no opposition from either flak or fighters. Hits were scored on both targets.
