(Our Own Correspondents HOKITIKA, September 22. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union met in St. Andrew s Hall last week. Members were urged to be more actively engaged in the work of the branch this time, as there was increasingly awakened interest in New Zealand to the temperance question. The new regulations brought down bv the Government in connection with the licensed trade were discussed. Mesdames Hadfield and Heyward were hostesses tor the occasion. . 1 Mrs C. M. Jacobs has received advice that her brother, Private Leo Breeze of Hokitika, who Was } n an Italian military hospital, slightly wounded, is now in a prisoner of war camp in Italy.. ’ Mr G. Wormmgton nidged the concluding debates in the competitions held at St. Mary’s Club Rooms on Sunday evening. Results were as follows:—Seniors: Mr W. Toohey 82 pts., 1; Mr E. J. Allan 81 pts.,2. Junior Grade: Mi' S. Davern 77 pts., 1; Mr C. Henderson 72 pts.. 2. Aggregate points for the year: Seniors: Mr E. J. Allan (305) 1; Mr W. Toohev (302) 2. Juniors: Mr S. Davern (282) 1; Mr C. Henderson 2. On September 30, senior and junior teams will go to Greymouth to debate with St. Columba Club. The annual banquet will take place on Monday, October 5. Miss J. Stevenson won the final or the local L.G.U. Championship last week-end, beating the holder Miss Adamson, two up. Mi ss D. Knight was the winner of the Mahinapua 1 Cup from Mrs Tomlinson, 4/3. The C Grade Semi-finals were: Mrs J'ordan beat Miss Eastgate: Mrs Michel beat Miss Wormington. In the Stableford Bogey, Finerty won the match, returning a card 22/14— 36. At the Borough Council meeting on Monday last, all members except Crs. Stuart and Duff were present, the Mayor (Mr A. R. Elcock) presiding. The Town Clerk stated there had during the past few weeks been an unsatisfactory position in regard to the sanitary contract. A ternporary contract had been made with the contractor’s son. Ari appeal was to be lodged with the ManpowerCommittee for release of a Government servant to carry on the work. Cr. E. W. Heenan complained of the j position taken up by, the Government Department ini opposing the release of the man in question. He understood others quite capable of doing his work were willing, and indeed had made application for his position. The responsibility! taken ’by’the officers of the Department, was a heavy one, one could understand a key" man being retained, but In this case, where his employment was of an everyday type, the actiom of the Department called for explanation. The Town' Clerk said a strong case would be put before the Appeal Board. Cr. Ross said t|iat if some women of the town appeared before the Board they, would put Up a strong case. Cr. Heenan said: Who' ever is acting as attorney for the missing contractor, and taking the full payment for a service that is not being' carried out, should be called upon to refund the money. It was agreed that payment would not be made .in future if the service were not performed. It was stated that the position in the past few months was a disgrace to the town. The Council was’ in a very awkward position. It was resolved that the Council purchase its own equipment and make an equitable arrangement with the new contractor.' It was resolved to take no action in regard to a letter from Waikato in regard to Hospital taxation, in view of a recent statement bv the Minister. Accounts totalling £1,279 were passed for payment. Abattoir fees for the month were £75 0s 6d. It was resolved to put in order streets that would be tar-sealed in the summer months. The caretaker of’ Cass Square reported damage had recently been done to the Cenotaph and other buildings. It was - decided to place the matter in the hands of the police. ' ’__
