BRAZIL INFLAMED By Loss of Ships [Aust. S NZ Cabin Assn.: LONDON, August 18. Strongly worded Brazilian newspaper editorials fanned anti-Axis sentiment, after the sinking of bv Üboats, five Brazilian ships. All five ships were torpedped off the Brazilian coast In Rio de Janeiro large crowds demonstrated outside German stores, demanding vengeance for the sinkings. Public anger was intensified bv assertions that the ships were sunk in a shajk-infested area. All commercial premises and schools in Rio de Janeiro were closed after noon, as a mark of homage to the victims. From the whole country came reports of similar anti-Axis demonstrations.
President Vargas, of Brazil, in a speech to a tumultous crowd which paraded to the Presidential Palace, emphasised Brazil’s rising fvj’v over the sinkings of five Brazilian ships. He told the crowd that Brazil would act with the maximum vigour to nunish the Axis criminals. “We have done nothing to justify attacks on cur coastal ships. An act sending soldiers, women, and children to the bottom of the sea clamours for justice. Not only Nazis and Fascists, but also all others suspected of Nazi leanings will be placed outside the Brazilian community.” The Montevideo newspaper ' “El Tiempo.” which is considered the Presidential mouthpiece, commenting on the sinkings declared: “The whole of America is at war. Since Yesterday. Brazilian brothers, we are with vou.” BRAZIL’S COMPENSATION. (Rec. 11.30.) RIO de JANEIRO. August 18. LONDON. August 18. The Brazilian Ambassador at Montevideo. Senor Luzardo. said that after the <ornedo a s struck, a shell from the Baenendv sank a submarine. The Baependv was transnorting troops from Southern Brazil to Pernambuco when it was torpedoed, with the loss of between 600 and 700 lives.
