Mr. W. R. Caldwell and Mr. D. P. Mumm have been re-elected ’to the Westport Technical High School Boarq ©f Managers, representing Employees’ and Employers’ Associations respectively.' \i It the Theory Examinations conducted by the Trinity College of Music, London, the following candidates were successful: Junior, Nettie Adjam (St. Mary’s Convent); Marjorie Kelpe (Miss Eunice Pullar L.T.C.L.). Preparatory; Christine Warne (Miss Meek).

Mr. L. Tredennick, who has been transferred to the mail room of the Greymouth Post Office, . was farewelled on Saturday and made' a presentation by the Chief Postmaster. Les, who was a member of the Old Boys Football Club and also Avon ’the golf caddies trophy two years in succession, has the best wishes of his many friends in further promotion in the service l .

A meeting of the Management Committee of the Buller Rugby Union was held on Monday night. Present: Messrs T. Scanlon (acting Chairman), H. Casey, J. Feehan, G. B. Wilson, H. Taylor, D. Lutton, H. Lockey, C. Robertson, W. Craddock (Secretary). Outward correspondence was read and approved. Letter from Golden Bay-Motueka Rugby Union advising that the Seddon Shield districts’ rugby unions be advised that the union will be unable ’to hold the schools’ • turnament this year owing to petrol shortage. Mr. Lutton considered- that the matter should be further gone into as some way should be provided to enable the boys in 'this district to participate in organised sport. He also said that in all other parts of the country, tournaments were being held as rail travel was available. The Secretary said the Motueka Union had abandoned 'the tournament and he thought it was not possible for the Buller Union to do anything in the matter. He thought that it might be possible to have a special train from Greymouth to enable a school game between West Coast and Buller. A let'ter. was received from the Star Club, Greymouth, asking that a game be arranged with &■ third-grade Buller team as a curtain-raiser for the Buller-West Coast Seddon Shield match. It was decided 'that the letter lie on the table for two weeks. It was decided to make application to the New Zealand Rugby Union to appoint a referee for ’the Seddon Shield game against Nelson on August 29. The Secretary reported that the gate takings for the Seddon Shield match was £126. Mr. Scanlon, social secretary, reported ’that the dance held on Friday was very successful. The net proceeds amount to £l5/10/11 and a vote of thanks was passed to all those who had assisted and especially to Miss Morgan for a donation of £5. A vote of thanks was passed 'to Mr. T. Scanlon for his work in organising the dance. It was resolved that the matter of securing the hall for a dance during the visit of the Nelson team be left in the hands of Mr. G. B. Wilson. That an application be made for special trains from Reefton and return for the shield match against Nelson, and if the shield is still held, special train from Greymouth and return for the shield match against West Coast was decided on. It was that the selectors be instructed to select 21 players to go into training for the shield game against Nelson. Fixtures I for .Saturday: Combined v. Ngakawau | at Ngakawau. (referee, Mr. I F. Foote); Pirates v. Territorial, at i Trotting Track, 2.45 . p.m. (referee, Mr. V. Anderson); Foote' Shield:' Third grade: Stars v. Technical School at Technical Grounds, at 2 p.m. (referee, Mr. G. Wilson). Ohl Boys v. Rovers, at Trotting Track 2 p.m. (referee, Mr. Burgess). Football and basketball teams from Westport Technical High School visited Granity yesterday afternoon for inter-school games. The weather was good and both schools enjoyed the day. Granity scored three wins. In the football ’match the score was, Granity 21 (7 tries), Westport 6 (2] itries). Granity had two outstanding players in the Anderson brothers who did most of the scoring between them. They - were too strong and too fast for 'the Westport boys, who played well at times, but could not finish off their movements. Campbell. Shaw, Kearns and McLellan played well. The basketball matches were good games and evenly ' contested. Granity A. beat Westport A. by 17 to 15,'and Granity B. won by 15 to 12. Miss Brown refereed both games. At the conclusion of the games the teams were hospitably entertained at afternoon tea. * Mr. Nightingale welcomed the- visitors and Mr. Metson replied, commenting on the good feeling that existed between the secondary schools of this district.
