Engineers, axe spending leave in. the township. The sympathy of tneir many local friends is extendea to Mr. and mis. a. Brough in the death of their daughter Ethel, which occurred at Christchurch last week. Deceasea who was oniv 20 years of age, attended the Waiuta school, Detore leaving with her parents to reside in Christchurch some few years ago.

Mr. F. Kittenberg who underwent a serious operation at Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, some few weeks ago is making a good recovery. i Manv friends will be sorry to hear that Mr. S. (Sam) Morrison, an old identity of Waiuta is very ill in the Dunedin Hospital. Mr. Morrison was employed as a blacksmith in the Waiuta Mine.. Mr. F. Moncur, M.P. Rotorua, was a visitor to Waiuta last week, and gave an. interesting address in the Institute Hall. The speaker dealt with the coal situation in New Zealand. and stressed the need for greater production. Mr. Moncur also gave an interesting account of his experiences in Malaya and Singapore, he having been a member of the Aerodrome Construction Unit which was evacuated from Singapore. Mr. A. Brooks, President Waiuta Labour Party occupied the chair. At the conclusion of his address. Mr. Moncur was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and was entertained at supper by the local branch of the Labour Party.

In a recent. challenge match for the Hops Cup, Tom Bannan and Jack McNamara , (Blackwater). heavily defeated Jim Fitzgerald and Bob Taylor (Waiuta). Tom has staged a come back in the game, of fortyfives. Fitzy has issued a further, challenge, and the return game will take place at an earlv date. A profit of £2O 9s 2d. was made at the local sports meeting held prior to Easter. This amount has been placed at the disposal of the Local Soldiers’ Rehabilitation Fund.
