Three More Sinkings
71 LIVES LOST.
(Rec. 7.30.) NEW YORK, June 28. The U.S. Naw Department;: Washington, has disclosed the loss of- three more United States merchantmen.
The entire crew of thirty-three belonging to; a medium-sized cargo ship died when the vessel was, Jorpedoefl : in the Gulf of Mexico on June 22. ‘'' J
Ten men were killed aboard; • a small merchantman when it was torpedoed in the Atlantic on'May 18.
Twenty-eight members of the crew were lost from a medium-sized merchantman which was torpedoed .in the Caribbean Sea on June-.2.;- ; j NEW AMERICAN MEASURES. PROVING EFFECTIVE.' (Rec. 8.55.) NEW YORK. June 28. I An admission was. made in a Ger-- | man communique to-day that the Ajcis submarines in tLe • Atlantic waters are encountering a fierce American defence. This is regarded ’as an indication of increased efficiency on the part of t.he United States anti-submarine forces. While it is undeniable that the submarine menace is still serious along the Atlantic Coast, new measures which ' the Navv instituted recently such as convoying along the coasts, and the greater use of small boats, are expected to checK the submarine toll, and eventually to reduce it sharply. SEAMEN’S SAFETY. LONDON, June 28. The Joint Maritime Commission and International Labour Office, comprising representatives of shipowners and seamen, unanimously decided that the safety of the men is a paramount consideration, and no expense should prevent the adoption of effective measures. The recommendations include the provision of mechanically operated davits, signal pistols, waterproof charts, first aid kits, and also the appointment o f Government inspectors of safety conditions. A JAPANESE FALSEHOOD WASHINGTON, J’une 27. Senator Hull branded the Japanese claims that a United States submarine sank the Russian merchantman “Ancarstratt,” as a manufactured falsehood.
The Soviet Government has also repudiated the Japanese assertion.
