HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent), HOKITIKA, June 29. The death took place at the Westland Hospital yesterday of Mr Joseph Llewellyn Fowler, an old and wellknown resident, at the age of 73 years. A native of Ballarat, Victoria, he spent the greater part of his life here, though he returned as a young man for a period to Victoria. He followed for many years the trade of a painter and signwriter, and then entered the hotel business, conducting the Central and later the Commercial hotels, He was predeceased by his wife and leaves a family of one son, Mr. C. Fowler (Hokitika) and five daughters, Mesdames Barton (Palmerston North), Stephens (South Westland) Moore (Auckland), Wally and Williams (Hokitika). He is survived by three brothers, Oswald (Hokitika), Bert (Napier) and William (Chch.) Four Hokitika soldiers are among the prisoners of war in Italy, according to advice received from one of them. Private J. H. Breeze, son of Mr. J. J. Breeze, of Hokitika. The others are Corporal M. Dwan, Privates M. Keen and J. Henderson. The letter reports that they are being well treated, their complaints being only against the weather conditions. While stating their relatives have no need to worry they wish that parcels should be forwarded as soon as possible. The funeral of the late Mr. F. Chesterman took place this morning. The pall bearers were Messrs, R. and B. Jones, Crop . and J. Cutbush of the staff of the Borough Council. The services at All Saints Church and at the graveside were conducted by Rev. D. Childs. Many beautiful floral tributes were received, and many friends were present. In the only football match here on Saturday, School defeated Kiwi third graders by 19 to 6. Yesterday the Home Guard held a well-attended parade, with exercises, and morning uniforms were agal-c - prominently in evidence, when the newly formed National Reserve unit paraded numbering fifty members, including many from country areas. Major McKnight in an address exhorted the men to put their duty first and take a keen interest in it. He was more than pleased with the class of men offering and hoped the companies in Hokitika and Greymouth would co-operate to the fullest extent. Sergt.-Major Gladstone was in charge of the unit.
