HEAVY QUAKE
IN NORTH ISLAND Palmerston North Damage [Per Press Association.] PALMERSTON NORTH, June 24. The heaviest earthquake experienced here for many years shook the city at 11.15 o’clock to-night. Chimneys 'and power lines are down in places. Considerable damage (Was done to shops and homes. ..... The duration of the visitation is estimated to have been two minutes. It came with little warning, except for a minor shake earlier in the. evening at 8.13 o’clock. Damage at Wellington WORST QUAKE FOR MANY YEARS. WELLINGTON, June 25. A severe earthquack rocked the North Island at 11.18 o’clock toWellington’s worst quake for many years. , Much minor damage has Deen, caused. The shock smashed windows and chimneys were brought down . Telephone communication was disrupted. x , No casualties are reported. > The main shock wad preceded by a sharp, but brief shake, at 8.15. Felt in Greymouth An earthquake which lasted for the greater part of a minute, was last night felt in Greymouth' about 11.19 o’clock. Though not violent, the tremors were of an amplitude which caused heavy machinery to sway, and lights to waver very perceptibly. The motion appeared to be one- from north to south, but did. not seem such as would cause any damage in this locality.
