WASTE RECLAMATION. P.A. AUCKLAND, June 18. “That this chamber deplores the lack of support by the Government to the waste reclamation movement, and impresses on the Government the need for more effective organisation. backed by the Government, for the conservation of waste material capable of re-utilisation in New Zealand,S’ was a resolution carried by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce to-day after a discussion in which the Government was criticised for its attitude toward the voluntary work of the Reclamation of Waste Committee. Mr N. B. Spencer said that a great deal of waste material had become available, particularly waste paper,, but they had tried in vain to obtain a lorry from the Government for regular collection. He had interviewed Im head of the Industries and Commerce Department, but it seemed to he nobody's- .iob. Speakers agreed that the work should be put on a proper business , basis.. DEFAULTERS’ CAMPS.' P.A. WELLINGTON, Juno 18. Some complaints about the conduct of the Whenuaroa defaulters’ detention camp were the subject of comment by Mr B. J. Jacobs, Dominion Vice-President of the New Zealand Returned Services’ Association, at its conference to-day. Mr Jacobs and Mr G. A. Hayden, another member of the executive, were in Rotorua recently on patriotic business, and after receipt of complaints and criticism the executive asked them to inspect the camp. Mr Jacobs dealt in detail with a number of specific complaints that had originated in Rotorua. He said it was "his opinion that apparently the inmates were being treated better than they should be, but in th« main the complaints were a result of exaggeration, in which the authorities themselves had assisted by small departmes fbom the rules and regulations. The facts of some of the incidents quoted by critics had proved correct, but they had a reasonable explanation. It was true the men there were treated as human beings, but there was no pampering in any way. w The conditions were comfortable V and the fare ample and reasonable.
