JAP. BASES RAIDED
On Three Islands BY ’PLANES FROM AUSTRALIA. (Rec. 12.50.) CANBERRA, June 3. Allied aircraft on Tuesday maintained their offensive against Japanese bases north of Australia. The aircraft attacked Japanese concentrations on the islands of Timor, New Britain and the Solomons. This is announced in Wednesday's communique from the Allied Headquarters, which is as follows:— Timor Island—At Atamboea, on this island, Japanese barracks were demolished. Extensive fires were started. A heavy attack was made by our forces. Ten miles south of Atamboea, another barrack building was under fire. One of our ’planes has not returned. - New Britain—Rabaul—An Allied aircraft strafed the aerodrome in a light attack. Solomon Islands—At Tulagi, our air force bombed enemy installations, starting huge fires. One large warehouse was destroyed. All of our ’planes has returned. Since a hot reception was given to Japanese ’planes at Port Moresby on Monday, there have been no more attacks on that place.
