FAMINE IN GREECE
LONDON, May 21. Neutral diplomats from Athens declare that the Red Cross must double the amount of food supplies being sent to Greece, to enable the country to avoid virtual annihilation in the coining autumn and winter, says “The Times” Lisbon correspondent. One egg at present costs 10s, nnd a loaf £6, from the black market. Tne diplomats also confirmed tnat not more than one parcel .in. 1U sent privately is delivered, which means that the Red Cross ships are the only remaning method of relieving suitering. . . . Because the Greek police are not allowed to patrol, there is a wave ot night robberies, which have increased the population’s difficulties. Lhe German authorities attributed , the robberies . to gangs of undisciplined Greeks, wearing Italian uniforms.
