(Our Own Correspondent)

Mrs G. Morris has returned from a visit spent with relatives in Christchurch.

Mrs Swan of Christchurch is spending a holiday with her sister, Mrs W. Rowe.

A complimentary social was tendered to Sprs. W. and S. Butterworth, Cook and Boutery, recently. On behalf of the district, Mr A. Jones, made a presentation to Spr. W. Butterworth and expressed the wish that he would have a pleasant time in camp and a safe and sound return to his home at the conclusion of hostilities. Music for the dance was supplied by Fischer's orchestra. Messrs W. Ryall and Spiers acted as M.’sC. Mr C. Henry provided as an interlude a song, "A Little Grey Home in the West.’’ An enthusiastic party lately visited the home of Mr and Mrs W. Butterworth, to honour them on the occasion of their recent marriage. An amusing programme of games was proceeded with, and at the conclusion a delightful supper was provided. During the evening Mr H. Mosley referred to the good qualities of the young couple and on behalf of all their friends hoped that tirnir married life would be long and happy. He then made a presentation of a salad set as a gift from those present. A small gift was also made to Pte. W. Butterworth by Mr Mosley. Responding to the musical honours, both gentlemen returned thanks. To honour one of its members who will shortly enter camp, the Barrytown Home Guard 'Platoon organised a “smoko”, Platoon Commander Lieut. Gilooly presiding. Following the Loyal toast, the Platoon stood at attention in silence for a minute in respect to the memory of two of its members who had tragically lost their lives. A comprehensive toast list was honoured interspersed with musical, items, songs and community singing. “Old Soldiers,” was proposed by Mr John Ryall and responded to by Mr A. V. Nesbit; “Boys Overseas” (Mr P. Wafer, Junr., Aircraftsman McLagan). Lieut. Gilooly in proposing the toast,'to “Our Guest”, made eulogistic reference to Cpl. W. Kennedy’s work as a member of the Home Guard and to the community generally. He then presented Mr Kennedy with a fountain -.pen as a token of the high regard in which he was held by his fellowmembers. He expressed the wish* that his period in camp would be happy and instructive and that he would return to the district safe and sound. Other speakers endorsed Mr Gilooly's remarks. In returning thanks, Mr Kennedy referred to the pleasant time he had spent in the organisation since its inception, and he trusted that, the Platoon would continue to flourish. 1 If ever the time came when the necessity to prove us worth did arise, he was sure that, along with all other Home Guard units throughout the district and country generally, it would, without any hesitation, give an excellent account of itself. The toast of t. “Home Guard” was proposed by Mi Nesbit. This was indeed a ngbt-ng sneech ” and evoked great satisiac ??on and applause Messrs Langridge and Werne re sponded. “E.P.
