The Liverpool State mine, Rewanui which was idle yesterday on account of a shipping delay, will resume work to-day.

The Greymouth Battalion of the Home Guard will now be equipped with full uniform, a large supply of the battledress and other military accoutrements having ajrri’lfed for issue.

The Medical Board at Greymouth commenced its first sitting to examine men called in the fifteenth ballot, on Tuesday. Of thirty-six examined, twenty were passed as fit, fourteen as temporarily unfit (5 fit for campl, and the grading of two was deferred.

Subscriptions to the Liberty Loan are acceptable in multiples of £lO with the sky as the limit. For those who cannot invest £lO or who prefer a more negotiable form of investment, the £1 Liberty Bond has been designed. For the intensive selling of the Liberty Bond, local arrangements are well in hand. For the present, however, they are obtainable at any Trading Bank or Post Office.

To-morrow (Fri.) evening at Kumara, Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., will deliver an address on “New Zealand’s War Effort and the New Order.” Many parts of the war effort not known to the public will be dealt with, and it behoves everyone concerned with what New Zealand has done, and will do, to hear Mr O’Brien. Comment on the action of limiting the age of new entrants into the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union to 45 years, was made by the Crown Representative on the Auckland Manpower Committee (Mr. L. N. Harris), when appeals in respect of nine watersiders were 1 heard. The appeals were lodged bj r the Waterfront Control Commission on the grounds of public interest. The monthly meeting of the Kotuku Women’s Institute, was held in Jack’s Hall. Mrs. Rowse presided, and there was a good attendance. The competition for a patchwork cushion was won by Mrs. Rowse. The roll -call was, “Uses in Place of Sugar.” The Institute regrets losing two prominent members, just recently, Mrs Waller and Mrs Stewart, who have left the district. They were entertained and farewelled by the members and presented with parting gifts. Supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Priest and Dalziell, when an enjoyable evening was brought to a close.

After a sitting at Greymouth lasting nearly 11 hours, the Conciliation Council considering claims for a new award for dredge workers, in the Nelson, Marlbrough, and Westland Provinces, reached an agreement on many clauses, *but the main claims and counter claims affecting wages, and holidays etc., were not settl ed. . The Conciliation Commissioner (Mr. S. Ritchie), presided and the assessors for the employers wereMessrs H. F. Butland, W. J. Radford, W. J. Ellis, and A. V. McLuskie, and for the employees: Messrs J. E. Laing, W. A. Boyd, W. O’Brien, and R. McDonald.
