COLOUR BAR IN JAMAICA

Disturbing news reaches us from Jamaica. It appears that some of the Americans who are there, engaged in naval base construction, are introducing the colour bar. The Jamaican newspaper “Public Opinion” prints an indignant protest, and gives a number of examples of racial intolerance by the American visitors. Canteen traders refuse to serve the native population because their American customers insist that only whites be served.

In some saloons heated quarrels have already occurred. Jamaicans are not prepared to be elbowed out of their own places of amusement and recreation, and unless the Americans responsible learn better manners ugly scenes are bound to occur. —“Tribune,” Jan 23
