154 SHIPS SUNK

The United States Navy Department has disclosed that 154 tankers and merchantmen have been sunk or damaged in the Pacific, Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, and African waters since December 7 mst year. Of these 36 ships were United States ships sunk by U-boats. On the other hand, 36 ships were delivered and 51 launched during April. In the four months ending April, 106 ships were completed and placed in war service. Thus the United. States production alone already more than offsets Allied losses. The United States Maritime Commission announced in Washington that 30 cargo vessels will be launched on Friday on the occasion of National Maritime Day in the greatest mass launching of merchantmen since the United States’ vast shipbuilding programme began. Maritime Day marks the beginning 01. the two ships daily production rate for American shipyards which are now launching one ship daily. U.S.A. INSURANCES FUND RAISED BY 210 MILLION ’ DOLLARS. WASHINGTON, May IS. The House Appropriations Committee approved a 210 million dollar increase in the Marine and War Risk Insurances Fund. It was reported to-day, that the losses of American ships already exceed those in the last war. The committee told the House that insurance funds are liable for more than one ship daily, at the present rate of sinkings.
