ARMY FOOTBALL GEAR
PROVISION FROM PATRIOTIC FUNDS OPPOSED. The provision of football jerseys and other sports gear for Army teams on the Coast was discussed by the Westland Provincial Patriot'c Council at a meeting last evening, when an application for sports gear was received from the Army Office, Greymouth. The Chairman (Mr. F. A. Kitchingham'' said that quotations had been received for the supply of sports gear and the cost of nineteen jerseys, nineteen pairs of pants, and three footballs would be £l9 18s 6d, plus sales tax.
Mr. P. J. McLean said that teams in Christchurch were being disbanded and the purchase of equipment from them should he looked into.
“It may be quite good,” said Mr. J. W. Greenslade, “but. the,re were other ways in which money might be expanded to better result Mr. J. Murdoch supported Mr Greenslade’s viewMr. P. J. McLean: We should make inquiries as to what is being done in .other centres.
Mr, Murdoch moved that the letter should be received and left to lie on the table. Mr. J. B. Kent: T move an amendment that West Coast soldiers be treated in the same way as soldiers in other parts of New Zealand. Mr. Murdoch: We can’t ask people to subscribe for the war, and then let them find out, that we are spending money on football jerseys. Mr. Kitchingham seconded Mr. Kent’s amendment. Mr. Greenslade said that at the previous meeting, at which he had not been present, there had been a discussion as to the amount to be given to returned men. He opposed
