E.P.S. CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. Close on twelve thousand enrolments in the city’s Emergency Precautions Services have now been handled by the volunteer selection committee. Most of the big sections have now been filled by postings and only a few minor adjustments requiring to be made.
The police are going through . a large number of enrolments and interviewing men who are required to bring the law and order section up to full strength. Out of the total of twelve thousand applicants, about five hundred have been placed on the “disabled” list. A total of 240 men was transferred to the Home Guard, and theix? ere about a hundred objectors, who have enrolled conditional on thieir not being required to do acts of violence, or oh not being placed under military control. The actual number of enrolments handled far exceeds twelve thousand, for many big sections such as occupational'groups, have been handled outside the selection committee. VICTIM OF LORRY ACCIDENT WELLINGTON, April 27. Th? woman killed on Friday when a petrol lorry, ran away and capsized in Nairn Street, was Kitty Stewart, a domestic, 48. She had only that dav taken a room in Nairn St., having previously lived in a different part of the city.
