The Minister of Health (Mr Ernest Brown), who was asked whether it was the intention of the Govern- ■ ment to' encourage an increase in the birth-rate, replied that it had been the policy of successive Governments to influence national life and economy in favour of families. He enumerated, as an -example of this policv, income taix allowances for children, provision for the care of expectant mothers, and preference given to large families in the selection of tenants for municipal houses. He added that this policy had been extended to numerous war measures.
