Many Australian Airmen RESCUED- FROM NORTHERN , ISLANDS.
(Rec. 10.20.) CANBERRA, Mar. 15. Four hundred R.A.A.F. men were evacuated from northern island bases under the noses of the Japanese. The rescues were made in two night flights by a fleet of Australian machines, which dispersed to different island bases. These bases had been pounded and bomb-pitted by enemy fighters. Many of the men rescued were wounded. The task was carried out by bombers, under hazardous conditions, without lights. One flying-boat lifted one hundred men from one base.
Australian Bomber Lost BY ACCIDENT. (Rcc. 1.18). MELBOURNE. Marc?. 15.' An R.A.A.F. bomber crashed into the sea off Point Cook last Wednesday. Four Air Force members were killed. The bodies were recovered. The cause of the accident is unknown. YOUNGER OFFICERS. FOR AUSTRALIAN FORCES. ’ CANBERAR, March 14. Two new measures to improve efficiency in the Army are announced by the Australian Army Minister (Mr F. M. Forde). Older officers are to give way to younger men, and the reserved occupation schedule has been revised to free many more men for military service.
