’ TANKER'S SURVIVORS. NEW YORK, March 11. Sixteen survivors from the United States tanker Gulf Trade, which was torpedoed by an enemy submarine off the New Jersey coast, 60 miles from New York, have been landed at New York. Nineteen are missing. BRAZILIANS DEMONSTRATE AGAINST SINKINGS. (Rec. 9.0.) RIO DE JANEIRO, Mar. 12. Furious throngs of Brazilians, who had become inflamed by the U-boats’ torpedoing of Brazilian ships, assaulted big German department stores and other Axis enterprises in the main avenues of Rio de Janeiro. Screaming crowds shattered show windows, and forced German firms and pro-German newspapers to run 1 up Brazilian flags. Thousands shout- 1 ed: “Kill them! Traitors! Dogs!” | The demonstration started when a, German shouted; “Long live Germany!” Three More Sinkings (Rec. 11.0.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 12. The U.S. Navy has announced that the British tanker and a Swedish freighter have been torpedoed in the Carribbean area. Eighty-three survivors from the two ships have been rescued by two United States ships. No lives were lost. The United States steamer “Oregon” has been shelled and sunk off Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic. Ten survivors have so far landed. Brazil’s Counter Move AXIS NATIONALS’ PROPERTY . TAKEN. (Rec. 11.0.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 12. According to a Rio de Janeiro message, President Vargas of, Brazil, has decreed the partial confiscation of Axis funds and property in Brazil. The decree stated that the property rights of German, Japanese, and Italian persons must answer for harm which has resulted from acts of aggression by their Governments. The money is to be held as a guarantee of indemnity for this.
