Eighty-three survivors from the two ships have been rescued by two United States ships. No lives were lost. The United States steamer “Oregon” has been shelled and sunk off Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic. Ten survivors have so far landed. Brazil’s Counter Move AXIS NATIONALS’ PROPERTY . TAKEN. (Rec. 11.0.) WASHINGTON, Mar. 12. According to a Rio de Janeiro message, President Vargas of, Brazil, has decreed the partial confiscation of Axis funds and property in Brazil. The decree stated that the property rights of German, Japanese, and Italian persons must answer for harm which has resulted from acts of aggression by their Governments. The money is to be held as a guarantee of indemnity for this.
