A communique from General Sir Archibald Wavell’s headquarters in New Delhi says that there is a temporary lull in Burma and that the British troops have withdrawn further north. According to authoritative circles, the British forces, which probably suffered heavy casualties, are still intact, and withdrawing into central Burma. A message received in London states that General Alexander says the troops fought “beyond all praise”, especially British armoured formations, despite the scope being limited by the nature of the ground, such as jungle and water courses in rice fields.
