Sir William Henry Bragg, 0.M., a leading expert in chemistry and X-ray research, has died at London. He was born in 1862.

The death of M. Kartushev, Assistant Chief of Civil Aviation for Defence, for which work he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner, has been announced from Moscow.

The death has occurred at Christchurch of Major B. T. Wyn Irwin, M.D., who returned home invalided from overseas in February. He was the only son of Mr. J. Wyn Irwin, of Christchurch.

The death of Mr. Raoul Dandurand, a member of the Canadian Cabinet, and leader of the Liberal Party in the Senate, is announced from Ottawa. He was born in 1861, and was educated at Montreal College and Laval University. He was called to the Bar in 1883, and became a Queen’s Counsel in 1897. He was called to the Senate in 1898, for the De Lorimier Division, and was Speaker from 1905 to 1909. From 1921 to 1930, he was a Minister without Portfolio. Mr. Dandurand acted as President of the Sixth Assembly of th'e League of Nations. He was the author of legal publications.

The staff of the Social Security Department met recently to farewell Mr. T. L. Moore, of the Placement Office, prior to his departure to join the Royal Naw. On behalf of the staff of the Social Security Department and Placement Office, Mr. G. G. M. Mitchell presented Mr. Moore with a fountain pen and a money belt. Eulogistic references were made to Mr. Moore’s capabilities and his popularity with the general public. Speeches were delivered by Mr. W. Richmond, Senior Clerk, Mi’. T. Shaw, Placement Officer, Mr. V. E. Thomas, District Em- ■ ployment Officer, and Miss M. Butcher on behalf of the lady members of the staff. Mr. Moore feelingly responded, and thanked his fellow officers for all the assistance they had given him and the presentation they had made. Mr. Moore reported for duty on the 6th. March, and it is understood that he will be proceeding to England to study for a commission in the Royal Navy.,

The Distinguished Flying Medal has been awarded Pilot Officer Richard Colvin Seddon Beck, R.N.Z.A.F., according to .official information received at Air Headquarters, Wellington. Pilot Officer Beck, who was born in Westport in December, 1911, is a son of Mr and Mrs R. Beck, Carter’s Junction, Westport. He was educated at WesLport Technical School, and was only commissioned in February, 1941. His official citation stated: “During his operational tour this airman carried out some particularly fine flights. In January, 1942, he carried out a successful mine-iaying mission off La Rochelle in adverse weather conditions. A few days previously he attacked a synthetic rubber factory at Huis. In September, 1941, he participated in a daylight raid on Abbeville. On several occasions he attacked a searchlight best near Bocholt, thus facilitating the passage of our bombers to their objectives. This airman set a very fine example.”—Press Assn.
