The ticket was purchased at Addison’s fruit and confectionary shop, in upper Mawhera Quay, on the return of Mr Moore and Miss Charles from the State Collieries’. Picnic at Hokitika on February 14, which was the closing day of the Art Union. Miss Charles’ parents, who were also at the picnic, purchased the preceding and following tickets. The art union was drawn on her father’s birthday. Miss Charles came from Rotorua about three years ago. “Whiskers,” the non-de-plume originated in the fact that Mr Moore had not shaved for a day or two, and his face was somewhat “whiskery.” The fifth prize-winner bought the ticket from the drapery establishment of Mr Henry Hamer, Kumara.
