Last week, freight hauled through the Otira tunnel from the West Coast to Canterbury, amounted to 14 928 tons, compared with lb,4Zi tons in the corresponding week of last year, and 14,510 tons in 1940.

Of twenty-seven men called in the last ballot, medically examined at Greymouth on Tuesday, 14 passed as fit, 10 classed as temporarily unlit, and one as permanently unfit. Ine gradings of two men were deterred. One recruit for the Independent Infantry Company (National Reserve), was also examined and graded temporarily unfit.
A sunspot with a diameter seven or eight times that of the earth is on the eastern Dart .of the sun, and wdl be crossing the medirian at the weekend. Aurora displays and magnetic disturbances are considered by Carter Observatory officials to be likely at the beginning of next week, the spot being of the type which in the past has produced such phenomena.
Wavell Stakes at Omoto on Saturday will be an interesting race. Be there!—Advt.
The Greymouth Patriotic Committee acknowledges further donations to the All Purposes’ Appeal, bringing the total to £52 9s. They are as follows: —Mrs. Manderson £1; Mrs. Lecher 10s; Mrs. A. Heinz 7s 6d; Miss Cairne'y 10s; Mrs. J. Scott ss: Miss A. Harman 10s; Mr. Ronchi ss; Mr. Godson 10s; Mrs. H. Herring ss; sundry amounts of under ss, 7s 6d.

In the Magistrate’s Court at Westport yesterday, action was taken against C. J. Atkin, publisher of the “Westport News.” for the publication of totalisator figures concerning the Westport Trotting Club’s race meeting in December, from which figures the “dividend might have been calculated.” The Magistrate regarded the action as trivial, and dismissed the case.—Press Assn.

The first smoke concert of the Greymouth Section. 21 Company Lines of Communication (Motor Transport) was held in Si. Coiumba Hall, Lieutenant J. W. Greenhill presiding over a large attendance. Captain _B. Cummings, Com* any Commander, and Lieutenant H. Hutchinson, Adjutant, Home Guard, were guests. Items were given by Messrs J. Duffy, B. Cummings, Nixon, L. Abbie and Abbie’s Orchestra.

The weather in Greymouth has become very uncertain during the last few days after a very fine spell. Yesterday was showery, and a torrential downpour occurred about 7 p.m. The uncertainty of tho weather made it very doubtful whether the Technical High School swimming sports should be held. It was decided to proceed with them, and the event was very successful under the supervision of Mr W. S. Marshall.
