CERTISSIMUS KNOCKED OUT. P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Feb. 25. While being driven along the road at Pleasant Point, the champion trotter, Certissimus, fell and struck his head on the asphalt, and was knocked unconscious. A bee stung the horse on the nose. Certissimus plunged, and in so doing caught his overcheck over the point of the shaft. This caused him to fall heavily on his head. The accident happened at 11 o’clock yesterday morning, and although a veterinary surgeon and a doctor were in constant attendance, the .horse did not recover sufficiently to ge got on his feet until 10 o’clock this morning, when he was taken to his stable. The horse lay on the side of the road all night, with a tent erected over him to keep him warm and dry. An expert has arrived from Dun.edin, and there is every prospect of the horse making a satisfactory recovery. SKIPTON MAY NOT START. IN ST. LEGER. MELBOURNE, February 25. Trainer Jack Fryer was greatly disappointed with Skipton’s Futurity Stakes effort, and stated that the colt’s St. Leger starting depends upon his progress in the next few days. Furthermore, unless he wans the St. Leger comfortably, he will be spelled immediately. M. McCarten has accepted the mount on Saul in the Australian Cup. He won on that horse last year, and also earlier on .Heroic Prince.
V.R.C. NEWMARKET. (Rec. 11.30.) MELBOURNE, Feb. 25. High Title gave his leg a knock at the week-end, which caused his trainer anxiety, but lie moved splendidly over three furlongs in 36 secs, at Mentone to-day, and pulled up well. He is regarded as a sure runner in the 1 Newmarket Handicap, but if he is scratched, Badger will ride All Veil. D. Munro rides Reception. Racing Notes Hearth: It has been suggested that the main object in bringing the W.R.C. Handicap winner, Hearth, to Hokitika, where she won the main race on Saturday, is the belief that a race would do more to sharpen her up, than a week’s work on the training track. This Paladin —Kerbside mare is favoured by many for the Dunedin Cup next Saturday.
