REEFTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) REEFTON, February 17. Only a skeleton staff is employed at the Burke’s Creek collieries at present, this being the result of the fire experienced at the week-end. However, the boilers are in good order, and some temporary gear has been procured, and it is expected that production will be resumed to-morrow, when nbout half of the available men will be employed. Just how soon full production will, be reached will depend on how soon the Grey Power Bohrd can make the power available. All the motors and the necessary electrical equipment are to hand, and it is expected that every endeavour will be made to have the power installed at an early date. It is also expected that work will be found for those men whose employment is affected. The Inangahua County Council has completed the footpath next to the High School. The concrete kerbing has been put in and the path laid fills a long-felt want. In the past, children have had to use the roads, and this was a dangerous practice in view of the traffic on the street. The Trotting Club are ver v optimistic over the prospects of their meeting to be held on March 7. Very good acceptances are expected. The special passenger train from Westport should considerably augment the attendance. Given a fine day, the Club should experience a record meeting. . , . At the Court this morning, before Messrs W. B. Auld and C. Nevin, U’sP., judgment for plaintiff by default was given in each of the following cases: —R. Roberts v. James Williams, £lB 19s lOd, with costs £2 16s; W. H. Rogers v. James Wright, £l3 Ils s*d, with costs £2 16s. The sitting of the Mining Court was adjourned till March 3. . Mr and Mrs T. L. Bennett left this morning Tor 'Coalgate, where they have taken over an hotel business, taking possession at the end of this month. Through overturning on himself a teapot, the infant son of Mr and Mrs G. Murtha was severely scalded on his' hand, chest and arms, as well as on the face. He was taken to the hospital for attention. Mr Peter Coghlan, who has been a patient in the Hospital for some time, is making a good recovery.
