U.S.A. INSISTS ON RESTORATION. BY FREE FRENCH. (Rec. 11.50.) NEW YORK, Jan. 1. The British and Canadian Governments are about to consent, with great reluctance, to a demand by the U.S.A. State Department that the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon shall be restored to the Vichy Government, and that the Free French naval forces shall be outsted, says the “Post’s” Washington correspondent. “This will be a bitter blow t/ the British, because they have long despised the Vichy Government, and they only gave way regarding shipments of oil, food and other supplies to French North Africa, ' because the State .Department was adamant ITiereon.”
