Opera House

Now Showing: “Kiss The Boys Goodbye,” starring Don Ameche and Mary Martin. For those who wish to kiss their troubles goodbye, even for a short time, an immediate visit to the Opera Hduse to-day, to-night and to-morrow (Thurs.,) is recommended where the frothy new musical comedy, “Kiss The Bovs Goodbye,” in which Don Ameche and Mary Martin are starred, is being screened. Sharp-edged and sly, the story concerns an impish Southern girl, with stage ambitions who*, can’t get a break on Broadway, until she returns to the South to await the coming of a director who is looking- for the Southland’s fairest girl to play the lead in his new show. As Cindy Lou tßethany, the Southern . girl, Mary Martin is just about perfect, and Don Ameche, with his performance as Lloyd Lloyd, the stage director who finds her in his search for talent, will, win many new admirers. Oscar Levant, as the wise-cracking composer, who helps Mary slip a fast one over on Ameche, is a complete joy, with his fresh, natural - behaviour. Connie Boswell’s singing and Rochester’s raspy-voiced singing and nimble dancing, and a large assemblage of extremely pretty girls, round out a flippant and well-acted story. Others in the exceptionally good featured cast, who deserve plaudits for their in-the-groove acting are Raymond Walburn, Virginia Dale, Barbara Allen, Elizabeth Patterson and Jerome Cowan. Regent Theatre To-day: “The ‘New Zealand Premiere” of “Hold that Ghost,” Starring Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. This all-American laugh team are strangers to you. but this is their third and funniest film. Having already viewed their two previous pictures, “Buck Privates,” and “In the Navy,” at Wellington, which have brought ’box office records, and are still being screened in the cities, “Hold That Ghost”, equipped with' even a more diverting story thread than the earlier Abbot and Costello vehicles, and carrying a more imposing supporting cast and an elaborately impressive mounting, is probably, destined to surpass even the enormous grosses piled up by: Universal’s Army and Navy jerkers. Featured in the big player roster, in'addition to Abbott and Costello, are such important maroue.e “names” as Richard Carlson, Joan ■ Davis, .Mischa jAuer, EJvelyn Ankers, Shemp Howard, the Andrews’ Sisters, and Ted Lewis and his' Orchestra. That Abbott and Cos-, tello arA destined, to hold -for some time to, .cq'me ?the- high cinematic position?,tljpy have so suddenly gained, is clearly''demonstrated by . their rip-roaring.- contributions. to this newest Universal hit. They.-definitely are isolid entertainers with a broad appeal - for every film fan. Don’t miss, this film. t •
