WHAT IS A PATRIOT?

It is not enough to fight magnificently and to resist magnificently. We need to know the principles for which we are fighting in such fashion as to be convinced that they will not, as in 1919, be cast aside when victory comes. Historically, and in actual fact, a “patriot” is one who believes that the people of a country should rule that country; and that the policy of the government should be directed in accordance with the interests of the people 'and not of any aristocratic or plutocratic clique. Such a man will naturally protect his country against invasion by any barbaric power; he will also by instinct know where to look for what we now call Quislings.—By Harold Laski, "The Tribune.”
