GANDHI AGAINST WAR
Differs With Congress RESIGNING LEADERSHIP. (Rec. 9.45). LONDON, December 30. The London “Daily Herald” correspondent at Bombay says: Mr. Gandhi is resigning the leadership of the Indian National Congress. The correspondent adds: “This is a sensational step. It follows five days of conferences with other Congress leaders and the Congress Working Committee. His insistence on the full pacific doctrine, and his determination to continue the civil disobedience, have proved stumbling blocks in defining th e Congress policy towards the war. Mr. Gandhi, himself, proposes to continue his pacifist opposition to the .war. . The Congress Working Committee is reported to have evolved a formula permittng of a resumption of negotiations with Britain regarding cooperation on the part of the Congress in the war effort, including the possibility of a National Coalition Government for the duration of the war. The Indian Congress, nevertheless, does not abate its demands for Indian independence.
