Personal - . . , Mr. J. Shaw, has been appomtou stipendiary steward for the Westport Trotting Club’s meeting. Miss Pamela Walshe, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Walshe ■ and a pupil of the Cape Fouiwind School, has been awarded third prize by U ,e Nelson Centenary Committee in the Centennial Essay Competition, open to all Standard 5 and 6 pupils throughout the Nelson Education Board district Miss Helen B. Pollock, nas oeen appointed probationary assistant at Denniston D.H.S. and Miss Margaret L. Smith probationary assistant at Granity D.H.S Children's Ball: At St. Canice’s Hall lasc evening, a children’s ball was held and proved an outstanding success. Santa Claus was present and distributed gifts in lavish style, bringing thrills of pleasure to the young folk. Winners of special prizes were: Most original couple, Kenney and Shirley Phibbs; two best costumes, Miss Raywin Colvin (girl) and Master Michael Higgins (boy). Misses M. Hansby and B. Mara ably acted as Ms.C. A bounteous supper was served

Plunket Society: A special meeting was held on Wednesday at 3 p.m. for the-purpose of discussing the desirability of holding the Plunxet Ball owing to the recent war regulations and restrictions. Present: Mrs. Robertson (chair), Mesdames Enright, Hayes, Martin, Morgan, Hagedorn and Ryan. Apologies .were received from Miss Harkness, Mesdames L. Robertson, Holdgate and Jenkins. After a full discussion on the matter, the committee finally decided to hold a dance in the Theatre Royal, with a full orchestra. It was also decided to provide a plain supper Each member of the committee is to be responsible for a cash donation of at least 3s towards expenses. The committee would be very grateful i± any one interested in this work would leave a donation o f Is at the Rooms. As the annual ball has been one of the chief means of support to,wards the maintenance of the Society, the committee sincerely hopes the public will realise the difficulty and will support the dance to the same extent as its previous year’s functions. The following games have been drawn up to complete one' round ot the Buller Lawn Tennis Association's competitions (home team mentioned first):— Ist round, Westport v. Waimangoroa A, St. John’s v. Millerton. Hector v., Denniston, Waimangaroa B. v. Granity; 2nd round, Waimangoroa B. v. St. John’s, Hector v. Westport, Denniston v. Waimangarca A, Granity v. Millerton; 3rd round, Granity v. St. John's, Westport- v. Denniston, Waimangaroa A. v. Hector, Millerton v. Waimangaroa. No dates have been fixed and visiting teams will, under present conditions, have littie opportunity of playing their fixtures unless they travel by railway on a Saturday. Country secretaires are asked to contact other clubs and to notify the B.L.T.A. secretary of arrangements made and the results of games played. Owing to the difficulty ol assembling country players, there will be no Town v. Country fixture this week end. Lius match is accordingly postponed until the next meeting of the B.L.T.A. delegates to decide on the advisibility of holding it and also on the carrying on ol the competition. Competion Pgints of leading teams to date a're: —St. John’s 7; Westport 5; Millerton 4. In a Buller ranking game, Mrs. Burr (Westport) defeated Miss S. Cunningham St. (J’ohn’s) 9/2 for sixth place
