(Our Own Correspondent.) REEFTON, December 18. Mr J. B. Discac.ati presided at the meeting of the County Patriotic Committee. Messrs J. Patterson, 18. Mirfin, F. W. Archer, A. Stanley, P. Lord, C. McElwee and W. B. Auld (Secretary), were also present. Westland District Committee advised that for the coming year, the Inangahua quota was £1,194, and that a request for reduced postage on soldiers parcels had been sent forward to the National, Council for action. It. was resolved * that the committee continue to press for a reduction. Westland Committee advised that no rebate could be made on Customs duty on tobacco and cigarettes posted in pr.vate parcels to the forces overseas. It was decided that the National Committees be asked to clarify the position re. duty payable in Egypt by members of the forces. The Secretary reported that monthly receipts were £32/8/10, £23 having been received from Ikamatua Comm.ttse. The funds for Inangahua to date totalled £2,586 17s. Advice was received that another despatch or soldiers’ parcels was to be made from New Zealand at the end of January. The Inangahua quota for this was to be 93. It was resolved that the allocation be as in the last despatch. Reefton to provide 44. Mr D ; scac : ati is to arrange for packing and despatch, and goods Cor inclusion be purchased as last time. Heavy rain, wind, and a drop m temperature, have been experienced in Reefton to-day. So far, praciica'lv no summer weather has been had yet. This has an adverse eitect on - gardens. The Paparoa ranges have a light coating of snow, which is responsible for the chill in the an*. Local residents are living in hopes nt improved weather conditions for the holidays. The weather turned quite wintry yesterday and snow was visible on the ’ Paparoas. Yesterday, cold ram. accompanied bv heavy winds, fell all day last night, similar weather continuing to-day. Owing to the seriousness .of the war in the Pacific, the Reefton Businessmen’s Association has had to mocidy its festivity week celebrations. However, on Friday, a balloon chase lor children will be held and this event is usually a great attraction. On Christmas Eve, at 3 o’clock, a Babv Show will be held in the Band Room and should be well patronised. After th" Eaby Show, Father Christmas will pav a short visit io the Band Room. The decision of the Reef ton Jockey Club to hold a one-dav meeting on Saturday, January 10th.. is welcomed by local patrons. Petrol restrictions’ wil bar most from visiting outside meetings during the holidays. The Club has worked hf/’cl to provide sport for the district, arid it is hoped that this year it will be favoured with good nominations and acceptances and also a good attendance. Mesdames J. J. Ryan (Waiuta) and W. Hoplev (Reefton), have returned from a holiday visit to Oaniaru. Messrs J. J. Ryan, W. Hvnes and J. Wilson, were in Reefton to attend the funeral of the late Mr. J. Smith The funeral of tjre late Mr. Joseph Smith, of Waiuta, took place yesterday afternoon, and was largely at tended bv friends of the deceased man v coming from Waiuta to pa;. their 1 last respects to his memorv. The prayers at the graveside in the Suburban Cemetery were read bv the Rev. D. Evans, of St. Stephen’s Church.
