THE OPPOSITION CANDIDATE. P.A. AUCKLAND, November 20. Mr W. Sullivan, of Whakatane, was the only nominee when the nominations closed to-night for the National Party candidate in the Bay of Plenty bye-election, made necessary by the death overseas of Lieutenant Hultquist. He therefore, becomes the. official candidate. Mr Sullivan, who is 49 years .of age, was beaten by 169 votes b" Lieutenant Hultquist in the 1938 general election. Born in Taranaki, he came to the Bay of Plenty district in 1913, and is a member of a well-known contracting firm which has erected important buildings throughout the district. He was Mayor of Whakatane for thirteen years.
