HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, Nov. 20.
Heavy rain last night and this mornino- caused a high flood in the Hokitika River, which overflowed into low-lyin'- parts of the town, especiall - in Weld, Sewell and Tancred Streets in the vicinity of the Recent Theatre and the Post Office. Fears of a vet worse inundation were dispelled when the flood about 10 a.m. swent awav the lare-e bank at the mouth of the river. The channel over the bar has been considerably improved and the nori entrance is now not on 1 -- deep but wide, and straight. Shi’- 'ing conditions, therefore will be much better. The Gael is due from Wellington to-morrow. The rain ceased in town about 10 a.m.. but a heav- continued durin" the day. No serious flood damage is renorted from the country areas, although the Arahura River was runnino' bank-high this morning, damaging Malfroy’s bridge, against which a deal of debris piled up. while the southern approach was eroded and will reauire repair. Kokatahi and Koiterangi districts were subjected to a considerable degree of flooding. Messrs G. Rowley (Harihari), J. Donovan (Okarito). W. Searle (Herepo) and P. J. McLean (Greymouth) ■were to-day in town attending the Countv Council meeting. Mr J. Adamson, of South Westland, was a visitor to-day. The m.v. Gael is due from Wellington at noon to-morrow.
