U-BOAT VICTIMS

[Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.l (Rec. 7.30.) LONDON, October 11. A terrible ordeal befel survivors of a British shin that was- torpedoed by a U-boat. They spent fifteen days on a raft without food before being rescued. This was revealed by Mr Alexander in a speech. Seven out of the eighteen died before the survivors attracted a ship by- flashing tin lids in the sunlight, and the boatswain died after the rescue. Recounting their experiences an apprentice said: “We used to slide off the raft into the water to refresh ourselves, and stretch our legs, but after nine days, we were too weak to do this. We had only a gallon tin of water, and rationed ourselves to three teaspoonfuls daily. RUGBY, October 7. Authoritative circles in London have no knowledge concerning a report from New York regarding a naval battle off Brazil.
