Atkinson, returned yesterday from a visit to Cnrisrchurch. , ~ , _ Mr. L. Larsen, Jnr., of the Meteorological staff, Auckland, arrived yesterday on a visit to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Larsen. Mr. L J. Bayfield, Manager of the Chateau' Tongariro, National Park, arrived yesterday on a visit to his sisters, Mrs. S. Strachan and Miss B Corporal J. Anderson of w ?S/ a ™’ who spent a few days’ leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. P. Anderson, of Westport, left yesterday on i eturn to Christchurch, thence leaving « lor Wellington. f - T , 7 Mr. McKay, Superintendent ,o. N.Z. Railways Road Services, and • Benge, head of the Vehicle Inspection Department, were visitors to .westport yesterday, leaving later in Uffi afternoon for Greymouth. The death took place suddenly on Tuesday morning at the residence her daughter, Mrs. Edgarton, * onblanque Street, of an old and esteemed resident in the person o Mrs. Jane (Gran) Douthett, iLhct of the late Andrew George Douthett. The late Mrs. Douthett was born at Greymouth in 1871 and alter residing in various parts of New pealand. settled in Westport thirty-two years ago. The late Mrs. Douthett was actively associated with vanous local institutions, including thc Mothers’ Union,. Soldiers Relations, Club, Women’s Institute, Ladies Guild and the Women’s Branch ot the Labour Party. .At the V 1 her death, she was Worshipful Mis-tress-elect of L.L.0.L., No. 63, and was to have been installed into oilice in a fortnight’s time. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. B. Rogers (Christchurch), two daughters, Mrs. Edgar ton and Mrs. Senior; four sons, Edward, Andrew and Charles (Westport), Laurence (serving with the forces overseas), ana eight grandchildren, to all of whom the sympathy of the community is extended. Soldiers Relations' Ciuo. The above Club held its , usua * meeting in the Friendly Societies Hall. There was a good attendance and one new member was enrolled. Five parcels were packed and given to the various members for their soldier relatives overseas. As the Club celebrates its first birthday this month, it was decided to hoid a Birthday Afternoon on Friday, Octooer 17th.. each member inviting a fnend. The hostesses, Mrs. Piercey and Miss Wells, served afternoon tea and the meeting then closed in the usual manner. Buller Patriotic Committee: The Mayor, Mr. J. M. Robertson, presided at a meeting of the Buller District Patriotic Committee last Saturday night. Among inward correspondence was a letter from the Nelson Provincial Patriotic Council dealing with a request by the St. John’s Women’s War Work mittee for a refund of £5 to the St. John Ambulance. It was explained that no refund was due as the Sick and Wounded Fund was part of the National Patriotic Fund and) raised by patriotic effort throughout. New Zealand. The Nelson Council contributed £5,700 to this fund. Another letter from the Council gave instructions concerning the imprest account and the granting of assistance to returned men. With regard to a query concerning the enclosing of tobacco and cigarettes in soldiers’ parcels a reply was received from the Council explaining that regular bulk supplies were sent overseas for distribution under an arrangement with the National Fund Board. It was understood that each soldier received a free issue of 50 cigarettes weekly. It was also stated that playing cards were to be included in parcels in the future and that in fact they had sometimes been included. A letter from the Nelson Council asked whether the Buller Committee would take a number of books for sale in connection with a tapestry entitled “Cairo.” It was decided to take 20 books. Arising out of a query by one ot the committee members concerning a returned soldier who had been admitted w the local hospital in a critical condition and who had been placed in a bed where the conditions of adjoining patients were not conducive to the speedy recovery of the soldier, it vzas decided to take this matter un with the Hospital Board.

Competitions: There was a very large attendance at St. Andrew’s Hall last night when the annual competitions of the Westport Protestant Churches' Association were held. Adjutant Morley presided, and at the conclusion of the competitions, thanked the judges, Miss Lovett, Mrs. Mathewson, Messrs J. Metson and H. Maitland; treasurer, Mr. Campbell, and t(ie secretary. Miss McDonald, for their services.
