KUMARA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent,. Mr. Dave Forster an old Kumara boy r now residing in Wellington, visited here on holiday recently, looking up old friends. Miss Phyllis Sinclair, of Nelson, is visiting Mr. and Mrs H. Sinclair ot Dillmanstown. Miss Molly Simpson, of Christchurch, is on a visit to Kumara, and is the guest of Mr. and Mrs A'. G. Wood. Mrs A. Fensom is at present spending a holiday with her daughter, Mrs Geo. Hewison, at Ikamatua. A bazaar and sale of work under the auspices of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church was held in the Memorial Hall on Saturday afternoon. The Ladies’ Committee report good business and a very creditable result financially. The annual meeting of the Tennis Club was held in the Fire Brigrade Room. Mr. A. S. M. McLean, who presided, referred to the past successful season and looked forward to another enjoyable one. Mr. W. Evenden was elected President and Miss Myrtle Hunter Secretary. The opening day will be Sunday next. The State School Committee met on Monday evening last; present Messrs D. A. McLean (chairman', R Chant, R. J. Little and H. Hamer (Hon. Secretary). Mr McLean said that Mr. Reedy was in hospital and they wished to express the committee’s sympathy and hopes for his speedy recovery. Members concurred Mr. Little reported that special oil for the floors Has been secured, and he wished to thank those gentlemen who had done the work of oiling the floors. The secretary reported that the Education Department had acknowledged payment for the radio, but it had not yet arrived at the school. It was resolved that enquiries be made as to the delay in delivering the set. The headmaster (Mr. L. J. Thwaites) reported that in the period 8 September to 3 October the roll number had risen from 67 to 73, but owing to continued sickness the average attendance was 59. A pair of hinges was required for the garden gate. The basketball court was very rough, and children were hurt when they fell on it. The oiled floors were a great improvement and had abated the dust nuisance. Reference was also made to the collection I of dental fees from the scholars treated. The scholarship board had been renovated and was a very fine) job. Members discussed the matter 1

of the rough nature of the basketball court and it was thought that the surface should have been smoothed off. It was resolved to draw the attention of. the Public Works to the matter, with a request that the court be made smooth as soon as possible. A circular was received from the Hamilton West School Committee objecting to the Government commandeering schools for use as temporary hospitals for returned invalid soldiers and urging the building of hospitals for the purpose. It was resolved to support the proposal and to send a letter to Mr. James O’Brien M.P. soliciting his support. Accounts amounting to £4/17/4 were passed for payment.
