GREY HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. There were present at last evening’s meeting of the Grey Harbour Board Messrs J. Smeaton (chairman). E W. Heenan, J. B. Kent, J. A. Murdoch, W E. Pring, W. Clayton, J Mulcare, and the assistant-secretary (Mr R. Steel). The following remittances were received from the Treasury Department: Wharfages on State coal £94' 4s 6d, general wharfages £672 8s 10dRailway Department sale of scrap iron £23 17s 3d. The Greymouth Borough Council advised that the road proclamation plan of the proposed sub-division of reclaimed land at Gresson Street, had been approved by the council subject to roading, sewerage and water supply being done in stages as required, the lay-out of the wate. and sewerage system to be to the approval of the borough engineer.— The letter was received. The Union Steamship Co. * Ltd, Greymouth, forwarded a copy of a letter from the masters of s.s. Kalingo, Gabriella and m.v. Karu, requesting that additional mooring posts be supplied on the Greymouth wharf, one at Bay 42 and another a<. Bay 60, in order to secure the vessels safely during flood conditions. — The letter was referred to the engineer and harbourmaster with power United Brunner Coal Mines Ltd. applied for a further postponement of payment of rent due on Coal Lease No 4a/95. —The request was granted. A letter-was received from the New Zealand Harbour Boards’ Industrial Union Employers advising that the Grey Branch of the Watersiders Union proposed to withdraw unconditionally its claim in connection with the bunkering of the s.d. Mawhera. Blaketown Ratepayers’ Assn, wrote drawing the board’s attention to the overgrown state of Achilles Street, between Blake St. and the beach.— The letter was referred to the encrincer. ° Edward Williams, St. Kilda, Brunnerton, applied for a 21-year lease of 20 acres between north Brunner Track and small creek on west side of Brunner-Blackball road, at present held by applicant on a year to year grazing right.—The letter was referred to the secretary and engineer tor a report. • ~ _ _ Greymouth Yacht Club applied for an extension of their site for a pavilion between the lagoon and the footpath to the south tip, and also for the donation of old wharf decking cor use as piles for pavilion.—The matter was referred to the engineer with power to act. The following transfer was consented to: Section 105, D.P. 455, wes. 1427, Blaketown, Mrs L. C. Boschich to C. G. M. Dando. On the receipt of a statement ot accounts of the General Fund and Scholarship Fund, from the Westland Provincial Council, it was decided to purchase copies of “Old Westland to the value of £5. The Engineer (Mr D. S. Kennedy) reporting on the signalmen’s applications for cottages, stated that work on the land available would cost £IUU. The estimated cost of both houses was £2170, making a total cost of £2270. The report was received an.l referred to the Finance Committee. The chairman said that on the question of the leasing of the reclaimed land in Gresson Street, the committee had met twice to discuss the matter and .aftqr conferring wd.n interested companies a complete agreement had been reached. Thp Westland Laundry Ltd. had already commenced building on their site. As fast as other applications were made they would be approved. Mr Kent moved that the committee’s recommendations be approved, the motion being carried. It was decided that future leases be referred to the board’s solicitors. The engineer’s report as follows, was adopted: Main wharf: Re-deck-ing of the main wharf was completed —a total of 162 feet being done. The kerbing and mooring bollards have been replaced and the job is complete except for tarring and sanding. Docking of tug “Kumea”: The keel blocks were laid and the channel cleared of gravel and silt. General work: Painting of hydraulic cranes; shutters for nqrth breakwater concrete blocks; notice boards fixed at Blaketown beach prohibiting the removal of sand above high water mark; survey work . in connection with the Gresson Street sub-division, and repairs to lagoon wharf railway.

Quarry: Work was continued on the quarry floor, clearing up the spoil by steam shovel and dumping it on the approach to the half-tide wall siding job North Breakwater: Concrete work was carried on as weather conditions and seas permitted. Good progress has been made in building the platform for tipping 80 to 100 ton concrete blocks. The manufacture of these has also been started and it is expected that several blocks will be placed shortly on the southwest corner and so completing the protective work on this section. Oi late no damage has resulted to any of the work due to the heavy seas. A certain amount of railway and plant maintenance was also carried out. The quarry output was as follows: Second class stone 29tons 9cwt, third class 40 tons lewt; total 69 tons lOcwt. to north mole. Spoil loaded by steam shovel to siding job, half-tide walls, 968 tons; concrete placed, centre block 56 tons; river wing block, 100 tons; concrete blocks made, two 22-ton, 44 tons; concrete slabs made, three, 10 tons; total 210 tons; concrete blocks tipped, three 22-ton. 66 tons. Dredge: Port engine H.P. cylinder was bored out ajid a new bonnet made for the piston. This work is now nearly completed. The lagging plates on the cylinders of the starboard engine were renewed. Painting was carried on as required. The tug was placed on the hard for the annual survey of the hull and sea connections. The hull was cleaned down and tarred. A certain amount of pitting has taken place since the last survey in Auckland, a year ago. The plates affected were cleaned and painted with gold size and white zinc to try and arrest the action. This will require careful attention as if allowed to go on, will result in expensive repairs at no distant date The engine and boiler survey was also carried out. The boilei' was found to be in good condition and zinc plates have been fitted. The butt strap joint was also found to be in good condition. Steering chains, cables, etc. nave been inspected and overhauled arid the tug will be ready for service early m October again. Quarry: A new' 21) c. ft. self-dumping concrete hopper was made for the north breakwater job. Wharf: Bolts and washers, etc. have been made for wharf repairs. The report of the Finance Committee as follows, was adopted: Receipts—Shipping dues £6Ol 4s 6d, rents £5l 5s Bd, hire and sale plant £9 3s 9d, accident compensation £29 15s 9d, sale of quarry stone £23 17s 3d, de-

posits on hire plant £lOO, wharfages £1619 13s 4d; total £2435 0s 3d. The Harbour Fund Accounts has a creditbalance of £316 8s 7d. Committee recommends that accounts amounting to £1835 Is 7d be passed for payment.
