HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, October 8. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day before Mr. G. G. Chisholm, S.M., Oliver Robinson appeared on charges as follows: Assault, presentins: firearms, arming himself with felonious intent, and impeding the Inspector of Health in the execution of his duty. The charges had been adjourned for three months on July J. Mr. Kitchingham, appearing for the Health Department, said that no license was on foot for the factory, occupied by defendant. Tne machinery was intact and could.be used toi making cordials. No imorovements had been put into effect. .No license would be issued. He said that inspectors should be able to examine the premises, without threats or abusive language. The Magistrate inquired if anv inspection had been carried out recently. Sergeant Cooper said that he accompanied the Health Inspector when h e made a visit of inspection recently, and Robinson had used some strong language, but soon calmed down and gave no trouole. The Magistrate said it was not right that an Inspector snould require police protection when carrying out an ordinary civilian duty. This could not be tolerated. In repl v to the Magistrate, Robinson said he had a bad temper. He was not carrying on business. The Magistrate said the case presented diliiculties. He would order accused to eome up for sentence if called upon within the next six months, on the Police charges. On the charge or impeding the Health Inspector he would be ordered to pay solicitor s . fees, amounting to £2 2s, and Court costs of 10s. For operating unlicensed wireless sets, Radio Inspector A. H. Sumner prosecuted the following- N M. Barrett (ordered to pav costs 12s); H. L. Michel (fined Ids with costs 12s): C. E. Payne umed 15s with costs 10s). For. allowing stock at Ross to wander, P. J Mmehan, on two charges, was fined on tne first 10s with costs 12s, and on jne second 10s with costs 10s. for parking cars in prohibited areas, Mark Wallace was fined 10s with costs 12s, and William P. Jones 10s with costs 12s. There was a fair run of whiteoait in Westland rivers yesterday. In Hokitika there were some good catches while large supplies came from the southern rivers by aeroplane. This morning’s catches were much poorer. ~ , At the meeting of the Westland County Council on Tuesday afternoon, the members of the Westland County Council will recognise the services of the County Clerk, Mr. D. J. Evans, who then will have occupied the position of Clerk tor 50 . urs. The occasion will be duly celebrated. _ x 2 , At the Warden’s Court, to-day, J. L. Sweeney’s ?-mlication for an ordinary prospecting license over an area in Block XVI, Okarito, was adjourned until October 29 P. Graham was granted a certificate of protection. C. and M. Si P l t,k application for a special sea beach claim at the mouth of the Mahitahi River, was adjourned until Octqbm 29. • , The' Fire Brigade held a social 1/1 Mclntosh’s Club Rooms last evening io present awards. Superintendent 1,. Pvoss presided and there was a tun attendance, a length” toast list being honoured. In proposing the lire Board, Superintendent Ross apologised for the absence of Mr. A. n. Elcock (Chairman), who had a prior engagement, and extended a welcome to Mr. E. W. Hannan new Government member of the board, who, it was hoped, might hasten erection of a new .fire station, as ne was certain Mr. Heenan would put the same vigour into the Board ashe did in bodies he was connected with. Replying Mr. Heenan said that in representing the Government, he had no special instructions, but would do his best to see that plans for the new fire station were speeded up. Hokitika was proud of the Brigade and appreciated the voluntary service given. He would do his ver-v best at all times in the interests of the Brigade, The Superintendent said the Brigade for many years had enjoyed the hospitality of the Mclntosh family, and there was one member of the family who d d not spare herself to make the gatherings of tho Brigade successful, Mrs

Tomlinson, daughter of their former | Superintendent. At every social gathering the room was prepared, the table -well filled with good things, and after the socials, the place was cleaned up and timed. Over a very long period, Mrs. Tomlinson had given assistance to the Brigade, and it was the Brigade’s pleasure.to make a presentation to Mrs. Tomlinson, which in recognition of her kindness, they asked her to accept on behalf of the members of the Hokitika Volunteer Fire Brigade The Superintendent asked Mrs. Tomlinson to accept the presentation. The Brigade members present added their tributes, and Mr. Jack Mclntosh responded on behalf of his sister, stating it was a privilege for Mrs. Tomlinson to help the Brigade and tire presentation was totally unexpected, but deeply appreciated. The following service bars were presented: Secretary, “G. Lakin, gold bar, 3; •years’ service; Fireman P. Ross, silver bar 20 years; Foreman H. Davidson, silver tar, 20 years; Fireman F. Ballinger silver bar, 17 years; Fireman E. Lakin, 15 years; Fireman H. Thompson 14 years; The presentations, except one, were made by Mr. Heenan, who congratulated the recipients, stating it was a pleasure to present the service bars, especially to those firemen whose families had given excellent service to the Brigade over <■» long period of years. In making the presentation to Secretary G. Lakin, the Superintendent said he had actually been connected with the Brigade for 50 years, and, had he remained in Hokitika for all of the period, would have had 50 years’ service. However, he had lived at Denniston for a period, and there was no brigade there. He had been Secretary for 24 years. Th a following members were unable to be present to receive their service bars:— Foreman Williams, gold bar. 3o years; Foreman Groufsky. gold bar, 29 years; Fireman G. Kennedy. 11 years, silver bar; Fireman J. P. Coulson, 13 years, silver bar.
