CORRESPONDENCE
A BOOK FOR NEW ZEALANDERS.
(To the Editor Magazine Page) Sir,—l have just _finished reading "Poverty and Progress in N.Z..” by W. B. Sutch, and was therefore particularly interested in the review of the book by Mr H. Winston Rhodes in your last Page. I can endorse all that M'r Rhodes wrote regarding the value of this book. It should be read by all workers. The price is not prohibitive and its value is immense. The opening chapter is a masterpiece as is the one dealing with the British background. How many of us know the number of Enclosure Acts passed in Bri-
tain in bygone days ? Acts that were intended, and did succeed, in dispossessing the English peasants. Dr. Sutch writes in a refreshing style and knows the value of novelty. He proves this when dealing with the Enclosure Acts by quoting the following verse: — The Law locks up the man or woman Who steals the goose from off the Common, But leaves the greater villian loose Who steals the Common off the goose. If people read this book, I am sure they will demand more from the pen of this author. Dr. Sutch has certainly gone to a lot of trouble in his endeavours to show the social progress of this country. I am etc., J.F.
